As you know I am cutting my sugar intake this year and focusing on whole, naturally sweetened treats without any added sugar. Added sugar is in absolutely everything we’re sold at the grocery store, and it is the number one cause of excess weight gain in America. Here’s a scary fact: In the United States, on average, a 12-oz serving (1 can) of soda provides 150 cal and 40–50 g sugar in the form of high-fructose corn syrup which is equivalent to 10 teaspoons of table sugar. If these calories are added to the typical US diet without reducing intake from other sources (eating what you normally eat), 1 soda per day could lead to a weight gain of 15 lb in one year. Did you know that women are only supposed to have 6 teaspoons of sugar a day? And in one can of soda/lemonade/iced teat/fruit juice there are 10. That is how easy the food industry makes it for us to gain 15 pounds in a year.
I’ll be honest, I gained weight in the last year. I can safely say that it isn’t from drinking soda once a day, (not my cup of tea). It is definitely from a little vice I call chocolate, and not eating it in moderation. LOL! oops!
Learning about added sugar and what it’s been doing to my body has motivated me to try new approaches towards my favorite things. One of them being jam on toast!
This recipe is a winter-time classic. With the sweet flavors of apple paired a touch of tart from the cranberries, it sort of reminds me of Christmas! Even if you’re tired of Christmas, you can still enjoy this recipe, I promise 😀
There’s 3 main ingredients, Fuji apples, cranberries, and honey. Apples are packed with Vitamin A, great for fighting off infections. Cranberries are antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. They are also a very good source of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and manganese, as well as a good source of vitamin E, vitamin K, copper and pantothenic acid. Honey is the world’s natural sweetener, leaving no need for added sugar at all!
This jam is so good, and good for you, I’m actually using it as my serving of fruit after dinner with Beach Body! It’s like a fancy apple sauce, and I looovveee it!
Friends who are moms! I want to know: Would this be a good baby food recipe? Or are the cranberries and spices too much? Just curious!
Ok, Let’s get down to business:
Peel your apples! I used my Kitchen Aid spiral attachment… I think I did it wrong LOL!!
After you slice your apples, grab 3 cups of frozen cranberries. Make sure they’re ORGANIC with NO added sweetener!! Check the ingredients for the sneaky HFCS (high fructose corn syrup).
I’m using my silicone measuring cups from Flirty Girl Apron! They have the best kitchen stuff!
Finally, put everything into the crock pot and add your spices.
Cover and cook on high for 1 -2 hours!
Then blend with an immersion blender until it’s the consistency of jam!
- 8 apples, peeled and diced
- 3 C fresh or frozen cranberries (organic)
- 1/2 C honey
- 2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp cloves
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- Combine all ingredients in 6-quart slow cooker. Cover and cook on high until apples are tender, about 2 hours.
- Transfer to blender, or use immersion blender, and puree until smooth and jamlike.
- Taste test the jam… does it need more spice or honey? Add it!
- Store in airtight container up to 30 days in refrigerator
